School Uniform
What a child wears to school reflects his/her attitude to learning. It portrays the school’s ethos and shared positive values.
Having a school uniform a policy in place also provides children/students with a sense belonging and identity.
School Uniform
Clothing
Governors have agreed that as a matter of policy children should have a school uniform.
Uniform
- Blue / White – polo shirts (with or with-out logo)
- Navy Blue – cardigans, pullovers, sweatshirts and school hoodies (with or with-out a logo)

- Sensible flat shoes must be worn as there are steps in school.
- Please ensure that all clothing is clearly marked with your child’s name.
PE Kit
All children should come to school dressed in PE kit on PE days.
PE kits should adhere to the school policy and not have branding on them
Long hair should be tied back.
Our PE kit consists of:
- A plain white t-shirt
- Blue / black shorts in KS1 and KS2. (Cycling shorts are allowed but only knee length ones)
- Trainers– that fit properly, can be properly tied up and are different to shoes worn in school.
- A school hoodie which can be worn on PE days as well as for afterschool clubs and other sporting events.
Autumn/ Winter period/ PE Kit consists of -
- Plain navy or black tracksuit bottoms (no large logos).
- School hoodies with or without logo, (non-branded)
- A plain white t-shirt.
- Trainers– that fit properly, can be properly tied up and are different to shoes worn in school.
No jewellery should be worn for PE (children wearing earrings that cannot be removed will be asked to cover them with Micropore tape). Watches must be removed.
Children who persistently forget their own PE kit or forget to come in their PE kit should be reminded of the importance of PE and, if necessary, staff will speak to parents directly asking for their co-operation.
In the summer, children can wear hats and sun cream but this should be applied before children come to school.
Swimming-
For Year 5 and 6 children, swimming kit should be brought to school on the day when swimming lessons take place and taken home afterwards.
Swimming kit-
- A swimsuit (not bikini).
- Swim pants or trunks (not to baggy).
- A towel.
- Goggles - please see the Qualitas permission slip for consent.
Children with long hair must wear swimming hats or tied back whilst swimming.
Children should only miss PE lessons on health grounds, if this is requested by their parents, either by direct contact with the school via email or letter or in a letter to the teacher. Verbal messages from the children will not be accepted.
Non participants should be included in the lessons where possible. They can take the role of an evaluator, coach, score keeper etc.
Valuables
Valuables should not be brought to school, the school cannot be held responsible for valuable items that are misplaced, broken or stolen.
Extreme haircuts
The school discourages children from having ‘extreme’ haircuts that could serve as a distraction to other children. Hairstyles such as extreme patterns shaved into the hair, brightly coloured hair or a Mohican style crest are deemed inappropriate for school.
False Nails
False nails, especially long ones, are not allowed in school as a matter of health and safety of other children.
Smart Watches
Watches are permitted, and actively encouraged.
There has been an increase in smart-watches and fitness trackers in school and these are permitted as long as the watch does not have a camera as part of the device. For safeguarding reasons, these are not permitted
If a child comes into school and we find the smart watch has a camera device. The watch will be confiscated and parents will be phoned. The watch will be stored within The School Office until parent/guardian collects.
The role of parents
We ask all parents who send their children to our school to support the school uniform policy. We believe that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibilities of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform, and that it is clean and in good repair.
Year 6 –
Towards the end of Year 6, students may come to school in their ‘Leavers Hoodies’. This will be an agreed date with the School Head Teacher and The Year 6 Class Teacher.
Non-Uniform Days-
On occasions throughout the academic year, we hold non uniform/ dress-up days and Charity event days. Students are encouraged to take part in these events, to express their own individual styles and personality. As such the some of the rules are relaxed however, we still ask for parents and students to follow the General Health and Safety Policies and Safeguarding Policies:
- Inappropriate footwear
- Inappropriate clothing (short cycling shorts and skirts)
- False nails
- Jewellery
Equality-
Where children choose to identify as a different gender, no prejudice should be attached to this decision. The School Uniform policy is stated what is expected in terms of clothing, there is no expectation or enforcement as to the wearer. We welcome all at Renishaw Primary.
EARRINGS AND JEWELLERY
Policy on the wearing of jewellery in school
We are becoming increasingly concerned about the amount of jewellery being worn in school by both boys and girls, particularly body piercing.
The governing body discussed the issue in depth and came to the following decision:
- The wearing of jewellery of any sort (including stud earrings) is strictly forbidden during games, P.E. and swimming lessons. Any items worn will have to be removed before the lesson begins or taped accordingly.
- Pupils are not to be allowed to participate in any potentially hazardous activity, i.e. P.E., games or swimming for a period of six weeks after any body piercing takes place unless the jewellery is removed.
- If earrings cannot be removed by children, they will be expected to tape them up
- Pupils to be responsible for the removal and safe keeping of their own jewellery.
- Staff are not allowed to remove jewellery.
- Other pupils cannot assist in removing the jewellery of other pupils.
- We suggest that parents remove any relevant jewellery in the morning before a child comes to school when P.E. is on the timetable.
- We suggest to parents that should they wish their child to have any body piercing that this is done at the beginning of the summer break.
Governors agreed that the wearing of a watch and possibly something small of a religious nature be allowed. The Governing body stress that their prime concern, and that of the school, is the safety of its pupils and are following guidelines from the Health & Safety at Work Act and guidelines detailed in the DCSF booklet entitled ‘Safe Practice in Physical Education’.
We understand the pleasure that the wearing of jewellery gives to children, particularly when it is new, but we consider the risks of accidents involving the wearing of jewellery are great when children are involved in the day to day activities of school life.
We would appreciate your support with this matter. Thank you.
- For health and safety reasons and the potential risk of loss, Renishaw Primary School discourages the wearing of any jewellery for pupils,
- The ONLY jewellery pupils are permitted to wear are one small pair of stud earrings, a watch or any religious adornment. Bracelets and necklaces are frequently broken accidently whilst the children are playing in school which of course causes distress.
- 'Safe Practice in Physical Education' guidelines issued by BAALPE (British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education) all jewellery SHOULD be removed for Physical Education lessons and related out of hours’ activities,
- Derbyshire County Council state that earrings can be taped for noncontact sport. However, earrings MUST be removed for contact sports and swimming lessons, both the earrings and tape could create a hazard in the swimming pool,
- Teaching and non-teaching staff will NOT assist any pupil in the removal, or replacement of jewellery prior to, or following, a physical education lesson or out of hours’ activity, but will support taping,
- If pupils are unable to remove jewellery, or apply tape, for whatever reason, they will not be permitted to take part in the lesson or activity, as they may be endangering themselves and others. It is not acceptable for children to miss P.E. lessons as these form part of the National Curriculum,
- If you wish your son or daughter to have their ears pierced, please ensure that it is done at the beginning of the summer holiday, in order that the piercing has healed and earrings can be removed for P.E. lessons.
- Valuables should not be brought to school, the school cannot be held responsible for valuable items that are misplaced, broken or stolen.
Enforcement
We do not wish to take a heavy-handed approach to the enforcement of uniform in school, nor do we wish for the policy to be disregarded. Where possible, we will work with families to ensure compliance to the rules of the school. This includes working closely with families who are entitled to FSM to develop alternative solutions.
Lost Property
Please name all items of children’s clothing.
Naming all items of clothing doesn’t stop loss, but increases the chance of reuniting the item with the owner.
We do keep lost property for a reasonable period of time, but it is often difficult to identify items that are not labelled. If your child has lost something then please check in their classroom first, then check in the lost property box in each school block. Then lastly, please check the Lost Property clothing stand which is located outside Mr Fullers office.
