Physical Education
Subject Leader: Miss Hagin / Mr Fuller
Intent
At Renishaw Primary School, our aim is to provide a quality and meaningful Physical Education Curriculum which has a positive influence on a child’s concentration, attitude and academic achievement. We recognise the significant impact that PE plays within our lives and the value of healthy lifestyles in modern day living.
We aim to involve all children to help secure and extend their sport specific knowledge and vocabulary, contributing to creating lifelong learners and athletes, no matter their ability or background. Within all PE lessons, we aim for children to develop their physical literacy necessary for their positive mental, social, emotional and physical wellbeing, both to impact them now and in the future. Our broad and balanced curriculum focuses on the development of the whole person, delivering learning opportunities that inspire children to succeed in physical activities. In line with the delivery of the “British Values” and protected characteristics, at Renishaw Primary School we aim to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of a team, along with promoting fairness, equality of play and sportsmanship.
Implementation
We believe that through offering an outstanding PE curriculum and extra – curricular opportunities, this will have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of our children.
The Head Teacher and PE co- Ordinator are committed to ensure that all pupils receive a weekly, high-quality PE lesson along with other sporting activities, delivered by class teachers and our specialist sports coach. Physical Education is further supplemented in all year groups using active lunchtimes. This works alongside our healthy eating strategies to encourage children to take part in daily physical activity.
Through our School Sport’s Partnership delivered by Qualitas Sport, we offer children the opportunity to take part in a broad range of inter school competitions and sporting festivals. Children regularly participate in inter school football and netball competitions, both held at or school and other central venues. An integral part of our ethos is that we enter teams with a variety of abilities therefore providing competitive sport opportunities for all pupils.
Within the school, children from all year groups have the opportunities to participate in our annual Sports Day and Colour Run. During lessons, there is a focus on sporting events taking part both national and globally allowing children to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the sporting world around them.
To celebrate children’s sporting achievements both in and out of school, we use our weekly assemblies and to receive recognition for their participation and sporting success. At Renishaw, we aim to offer children a wide range of extra – curricular sports clubs, this including archery, golf, hockey, football, netball and yoga.

Qualitas Sport offer a variety of whole class or small group physical education interventions which will be delivered as an when it is deemed appropriate by the school. These interventions are outlined in the document below.
Physical Education Interventions
School Swimming
All pupils during their time in KS2, will have the opportunity to attend at least 10 hours of swimming sessions. These sessions are designed to allow children the opportunity to meet the following National Curriculum requirements:
- To swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively
- Perform safe self – rescue in different water- based situations.
Below is an outline of the 2024 – 2025 Year 6 cohort and the percentage of children who were able to achieve the above requirements. These are also outlined on the School Sports Premium Document found on the Sports Premium page.

After School Clubs
At Renishaw, we aim to provide children with as many extra curricular opportunities as possible alongside the PE curriculum. We believe this will help to broaden their sport involvement and aid them in becoming successful and active individuals. We provide a daily after school club, ran by Qualitas Sport to help enrich children with exciting sporting experiences.
We also seek to create strong links within the local community by promoting outside of school activities by distributing any advertising literature of nearby clubs we feel our pupils may benefit from.
For more information on after school clubs both in and out of school, please visit our Breakfast Club, After School Club and Residentials page.
PE Premium
The welcome allocation of additional funds from the government will enable us to further develop initiatives already being pursued. We want to extend our established emphasis on encouraging healthy lifestyles and positive attitude to physical activity. We aim to improve the quality and consistency of teaching of physical education. Moreover, by looking outside the school day we will significantly develop more opportunities for children to experience a range of very different activities.
Qualitas Events and Festivals
Whilst working with Qualitas Sport, we offer children the opportunity to take part in a broad range of inter school competitions and sporting festivals. These events are held at central venues around the local area and Derbyshire. An integral part of our ethos is that we enter teams with a variety of abilities therefore providing competitive sport opportunities for all pupils.
A list of the events for this academic year are outlined below. These events will be communicated with parents as and when it is appropriate throughout the school year.

Pupil Voice
At Renishaw Primary, pupil voice plays a vital role in shaping our PE curriculum. Children are regularly asked for their views on lessons, clubs, and sporting events, helping us to understand what they enjoy, what challenges them, and what they would like to see more of. Their ideas directly influence the activities we provide, ensuring PE is engaging, inclusive, and tailored to their interests. We value their feedback enormously, and it helps us continually improve the quality of our provision.
Parent voice is also greatly appreciated, with families encouraged to share their thoughts on PE and sport through conversations, questionnaires, and feedback at events. This partnership allows us to celebrate successes, identify areas for improvement, and ensure our programme supports the needs of all pupils both in and out of school.
